A PASSION FOR YOGA

Karen’s mother took her to her first yoga class in Bolivia. Being an athlete from a young age, Karen could not believe the physical workout her body went through confined to a yoga mat. This was the start of Karen’s journey to seek out yoga teachers and studios to continue to evolve her own practice.

Over the next few years, Karen supported the marketing and business development of Jai-dye. Later in 2013, during her role of Chief Marketing Officer at Lumeria Maui, the boutique hotel and retreat center in Maui, Karen was responsible for attracting and hosting top yoga teachers from around the world. Karen went out of her way to make these retreats memorable and took on the role of photographer and video support so that the participants could return home with memories of their yoga retreat. Yoga instructors hosting retreats included Tommy Rosen, Ana Forrest, Jason Crandell, John Friend, Craig Villani and Brock and Krista Cahill.

MEDITATION PRACTICE

Karen began her meditation practice in Arizona in the late 1990s. She joined the Soka Gakkai International (SGI) in Arizona and later continued to practice at SGI centers in the U.S., Brazil and France. The SGI is a global Nichiren Buddhist movement of people for peace. They were nominated for the 2015 Nobel Peace Prize. SGI believes our capacity to create happiness is infinite. The challenge lies in bringing forth our greatest possible selves in the face of daily reality. The world is woven of the profound connections of one life to another and this is why our actions can make ripples of positive change. Nichiren Buddhism practices the mantra Nam Myoho Renge Kyo, the mystic law of the lotus sutra. Karen’s favorite rendition is Tina Turner’s Sound of the Mystic Law.

Most recently, Karen received the Meditation and Mindfulness Teacher Training Certificate from the School of Positive Transformation. This meditation training is a scientific-based training taught by Dr. Itai Ivtzan, a psychologist and Associate Professor at Naropa University.
